Magnificently reflecting the past glory of the
Roman Empire, the Coliseum is one of the greatest
architectural monuments and the largest structure
of its kind in the ancient world that proudly
withstands the test of time and bears witness
to the empire’s splendour and prosperity.
Grandly constructed during the reign of Emperor
Vespasiano and taking 10 years of painstaking
labour and venerable endeavour to turn the gracious
dream into the remarkable grandeur in 80 A.D.,
the Coliseum was perfectly designed to stage,
in the most practical and efficient way, spectacles
and various forms of public entertainment. Boasting
the architectural genius, the famous landmark
was capable of holding 50,000 spectators, featuring
approximately 80 entrances, and a height of
about 160 ft. For centuries, the stadium had
served as a faithful entertainment centre of
Rome by hosting such events as gladiator fights,
mock naval battles and exotic animal combats.
After the Roman Empire fell, the stadium had
suffered from extensive damage and has been
gradually restored. Even in its present state
of ruin, the Coliseum is today the most recognisable
symbol of Rome and a world-renowned tourist
attraction.
To celebrate the architectural marvel and grandeur
of the historical landmark, GOLDQUEST International
Ltd and B.H. Mayer’s Mint – Germany
proudly present the Coliseum Commemorative Coin,
another precious numismatic treasure in the
Wonders of the World Series, available in the
