Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister
of Independent India will forever be remembered
as an outstanding political hero, not just in
India but all over the world. A visionary leader,
he was a key player in the Indian Independence
movement.
Born on November 14, 1889, into
a nationalist family to Motilal Nehru, a famous
lawyer and Nationalist politician of his time,
he was educated mainly in England, but his Indian
roots pulled him back to his homeland in 1912.
As a young man, with an English upbringing influenced
by nationalist ideas coupled with his love of
Indian philosophy, literature and history, Pandit
Nehru fought for justice and worked on anti-imperialist
and anti-colonial policies. In his struggle for
freedom for his motherland, he even spent ten
years under arrest between 1920 and 1947.
His strong faith in justice and
a dream for an Independent India drove him on
and his efforts paid off on August 15, 1947, as
India woke up to freedom after two hundred years
of oppression.
Interestingly,it was his love
for children that led to his birthday-November
14-being celebrated as Children’s
day in India
The Mayer Mint—Germany
is proud to present the Pandit Jawaharlal
Nehru medallion under the ‘Father
of Nation’ series.
