The largest land living animal – the Elephant,
has played an important role in the history and
development of mankind since the ancient times.
Because of the enormous size of this meek animal,
elephants are used in many activities including
warfare and also served as sacred animals in ceremonial
activities in Asia, as well.
Tusk and trunk are the symbols of the elephant.
However, as the elephant’s ivory is in high
demand in the jewellery industry, decorative market
and even in Asia as a medicine, this animal has
been severely hunted by humans, and is now endangered.
Nowadays, the numbers of this gentle giant has
decreased and if no action is taken, the species
might face extinction in the future.
To raise public awareness of this nearly extinct
animal and to support the preservation of Asian
Elephant population, The Mayer Mint - Germany
exclusively minted “the Bhutan Elephant”
commemorative coin series within the “Endangered
Species” series. This golden treasure was
issued by the Royal Monetary Authority of the
Kingdom of Bhutan and endorsed by the Royal Society
for the Protection of Nature (RSPN).
