Well-known for his unshakable belief in non-violent
protest and religious tolerance, Mahatma Gandhi
spent almost all his lifetime to prove his creed
of passive resistance against injustice.
He was born Mohandas K. Gandhi in 1869 in the
state of Gujarat in Western India. With a higher
education in law from London, he accepted an offer
to work in South Africa. There, he was alarmed
by violations of political, and even human rights.
He eventually became the leader of the Indian
community in South Africa, in a quest for justice
by the system. He also continued to spread his
belief and faith when he came back to his home
country, by fasting against the colonial power
of the United Kingdom until India got its independence.
Up to now, he is still remembered as one of the
principal figures in the history of India, and
of the world.
Independence that he fought for by means of passive
resistance clearly illustrated human will. This
inspired The Mayer Mint - Germany to issue the
Mahatma Gandhi line, as the Champions for Peace
series is designed to commemorate men and women
who have made valuable contributions to world
peace. Here’s your chance to pay tribute
to the most well known, non-violent fighter –
Mahatma Gandhi.
